The eight-tower, 15-acre, 4.3 million ft² master-planned M City community in Mississauga took its next steps this week, as developers Rogers Real Estate Development Ltd. and Urban Capital Property Group were joined by Mayor Bonnie Crombie to celebrate the start of the development’s next phase. With the first phase towers M1 and M2 already under construction and set to take the crown as Mississauga’s tallest buildings, this week’s ground breaking celebration marked the start of work for an even taller third phase condo tower known as M3 at M City, set to rise 77 storeys (although its mechanical penthouse peak rises higher to the equivalent of 81 storeys). M3 will further cement the community’s skyline dominance in the heart of Mississauga.

“Rogers Real Estate Development is thrilled with the progress being made at M City in Mississauga. Our goal has always been to develop a world-class community befitting any city in the world. With M3 moving onto construction, we are one step closer to that goal,” reads a statement issued by John Anderton, Vice President, Treasurer, Rogers Real Estate Development Limited. “Mississauga’s stature has only grown since we first announced M City, which is a validation of our unwavering belief in this city and our continued commitment to deliver cutting-edge design that resets expectations of what Mississauga should look and feel like.”

This week’s ground breaking comes weeks after the first signs of construction were spotted adjacent to the first two towers. A large pit has taken shape at the project site, and drilling rigs are present as the site’s shoring and excavation stages get going.

The IBI Group design for the tower was the result of a design competition that drew in proposals from several of the country’s top architecture firms. A sawtooth balcony pattern and slender width-to-height ratio will define the tower’s exterior as it rises just over 260 metres to its pinnacle. For a familiar comparison, M3’s height ranks just a few feet shy of the TD Canada Trust Tower at Brookfield Place in Toronto’s Financial District, which currently stands as Toronto’s 5th tallest building.

“M3 cements the notion that M City is a catalyst for the evolution of Mississauga,” reads a statement issued by Mark Reeve, Partner at Urban Capital Property Group. “I’m very proud of our tremendous team, which includes the owner/developer, Rogers Real Estate Development Limited, IBI Group, Cecconi Simone, Ellis Don, Cooper Robertson and our other leading-edge consultants. I’m especially proud of the team we have on-site, who have been able to persevere under unprecedented conditions and ensure construction remains on schedule. It’s a testament to their skill and dedication.”
